Morality arose before there were humans. Why do the devout need to rationalize that morality began with the Abrahamic God?
In a Medium article published November 19, 2024, Matthew promoted the well-worn saw that religion is necessary for human morality. To make his case, he tries to push a square block through a round hole to get to his ultimate goal — to justify religion’s, specifically Christianity’s, necessary role as the basis for morality and social cohesion.
But before I discuss Matthew’s argument, I want to address the many comments he received. Most of the push back was about the complete hypocrisy of Christianity, and religions in general, which has a long history of inflicting oppression, torture, and death to heathens; that is anybody who isn’t a Christian or even the correct Christian denomination — the incorrect one being any other than the denomination of the people inflicting the punishment.
